The School of Mathematical and Data Sciences was recently represented on Capitol Hill during #MathSciOnTheHill, a national advocacy event highlighting the importance of federal support for the mathematical sciences. SMDS Director Dr. Jessica Deshler, SMDS graduate student Brian Laverty, WVU Geology & Geography graduate student Maliha Binte Mohiuddin and Marshall University faculty member Dr. Tom Cuchta served as the West Virginia Team, meeting with policymakers to discuss the impact of mathematics research and education. Their participation was featured in the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Newsletter (March–April 2026, p. 20).
