Applied Analysis REU

Research Experiences for Undergraduates
June 2 - July 27, 2024

The School of Mathematical and Data Sciences (SMDS) is part of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences of WVU and melds mathematics, statistics, and data sciences. The research faculty of the mathematics unit specializes in algebra, applied analysis, applied mathematics, combinatorics and graph theory, mathematics education, probability and statistics, set theory, and topology.

Participants can get guidance about WVU’s programs and campus from the two WVU Visitors Centers and enhance their academic excellence with the help of the Office of Undergraduate Research, which organizes workshops and offers on-campus programming, career mentoring and advice on applying for undergraduate research opportunities, and travel funding.

Participants stay in one of West Virginia’s (WVU) residence halls. These residences are within walking distance from Armstrong Hall (the School of Mathematical and Data Sciences building), dining facilities, Mountainlair Student Union, downtown library, downtown Morgantown, and the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT). The PRT, built by Boeing Vertol, connects three Morgantown campuses of WVU and the downtown area.

WVU, an R1 land-grant institution, is also the home of the Lane Innovation Hub (Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, Morgantown, WV) and is very close to the NASA IV & V facility (Fairmont, WV), the I-79 Technology Park (Fairmont, WV) and the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services Division (Clarksburg, WV). Local infrastructure can facilitate travel for participants without cars.

Morgantown Metro Area offers a diverse food scene, a variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, and many big-city amenities like the Art Museum of WVU, the planetarium (WVU Department of Physics, Morgantown, WV), the Metropolitan Theatre, the Lyell B Clay Concert Theatre, the Milan Puskar Stadium (football), the WVU Coliseum (basketball), the Morgantown Municipal Ice Arena (ice hockey), the Monongalia County Ballpark (baseball), the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park (swimming), and the WVU Recreation Center (weight and fitness equipment, climbing wall, two swimming pools, outdoor fields, group exercise classes, wellness programs, fitness testing, personal training). In addition, students can find everything they need at the Morgantown Mall, Suncrest Towne Center, and University Town Center.

Mountain Line has various routes that service Morgantown and Monongalia County. On the other hand, the participants can use Greyhound and Megabus for distant travel.
